Transferring Origami Patterns to Paper with Methyl Cellulose

I found that by embedding a pattern on the surface while treating the paper with methyl cellulose, the pattern stays even after drying. This could be useful for transferring origami pattern to paper. It’s kind of like drawing a pattern directly on the paper, but without the risk of tearing thin sheets due to friction.

It’s just 3 simple steps:

  1. Engrave the pattern onto a cutting mat, …

Making Paper with Variable Thickness for Origami

As origami evolves, the patterns get more and more complex, and precision becomes crucial. But how do we accurately transfer these designs onto paper?

There are a few common methods:

  1. Folding: This involves using geometry to achieve specific ratios or using a grid system. It’s considered the “purest” approach since origami is all about folding. However, it’s quite tricky to …

Live CV

Over the years, A World Between Worlds has been the one site that records what I do. However, as it’s a bit informal and filled with content not directly related to my work as an engineering researcher, it’s not quite suited to serve as a professional homepage. So, I think it’s time for a change.

A few weeks ago, I registered the domain name zirui.fan, which I plan to use as my academic homepage. …

Site Migration

A World Between Worlds is now officially up and running with Hugo!

Hugo Theme Constant

Along with the migration comes a fresh new look. Since the site is now powered by Hugo, it features a custom-designed theme, Constant.

The theme is developed upon the Console theme by Marcin Mierzejewski, which draws inspiration from the Linux console. I like its simplicity, particularly the single font size and …

A 8x4 Font

Some may disagree, but I believe 8×4 is the ideal font size for low-res displays, like 128×64 OLED. It’s compact yet recognizable, and allows for a round number of characters on most displays. That’s why I created tiny_8x4, a small font in the 8×4 size.

Noisy Forest

I can’t believe it! Microsoft Minesweeper is no longer preinstalled in Windows! And the new version from the Microsoft Store? A chaotic, garish mess. Why ruin such a simple, iconic game?

Fortunately, the logic is easy enough, so I made my own version.

Enter Noisy Forest.

The idea came from Liu Cixin’s “dark forest hypothesis”. Imagine the universe as a dark forest, full of …

Maybe It's Time to Paint Again

I’ve been reading a book called What Are You Looking At?: 150 Years of Modern Art in the Blink of an Eye, and one particular fact from the book struck me: academism places a strong emphasis on the technical skills, but modernism shifts the focus to ideas and concepts. This really got me thinking.

As a child, I loved painting. I would spend hours immersed in my own little world, completely …

Dice Safe Rationale

What would the ultimate puzzle box look like?

In my view, the ultimate puzzle box would take the form of a simple cube: no buttons, no screens, no flaws.

But how would you input a password into such a device?

One option could be to connect it to a remote device for input. That could work, but I want to go for something more old-school, with no wireless connections involved — everything purely …

The Last Gift

From 2016 to 2019, I shared three unforgettable years with class 3, each step filled with moments of joy, struggle, and growth. Together, we created memories that will forever be etched in our hearts.

As a final gift to my classmates and teachers, I created the site Class Weekly, a digital chronicle linking our shared journey in 84 entries of articles and videos, now hosted on GitHub Pages and …
